I currently hold an F type visa, double entry 90 days + 90 days. Is it absolutely necessary that I leave china and re-enter after 90 days if i want to stay for the full 180?

Absolutely necessary. 100%. But HK and Macau are included as leaving. Wherever u choose, you can exit and re-enter as fast as you can cross the borders and complete the paperwork.

You cannot extend your visa. There is no such thing. You could apply for a new visa. If it is granted it replaces your existing visa. Yes you could try that, but remember that they might issue a visa for a shorter period of time that you ask for. Also, it does NOT start from the day the old one expires but from the day they process it: so you could end up with a total on both visas of LESS than 180 days. Or more:, if you apply at the last minute you have a period where they process the visa where you are actually without a visa.

I would suggest getting a local to make enquiries for you. Ask: if you apply for a new visa for 90 days will they approve it. If it looks a risk, it's a case of head over the border.
