I'm just curious as to whether or not i'ld be able to cover the following places in 10 days

From Shangahi

to three gorges damn

(maybe to chengdu?)

then to Jiuzhaigou Valley

and end up in Xian

it will be this summer, my main concerns are travel times and routes.

Yes, sounds possible.
Shanghai -- overnight train -- Wuhan (1 day, or transit only) -- bus/train (5 hours) -- Yichang (1 day) -- flight -- Chengdu (2 days) -- flight (1 hour) OR bus (1 day) -- Jiuzhaigou (2-3 days) -- flight -- Xi'an (2 days).

D1 shanghai--yichang (1875 km)
Take by the train No K253/252 from Shanghai to Yichang lasting about 23 hours and 18 minutes.
D2 arrive in Yichang City and at 19:00 embark the cruise at Maoping or Taipingxi Dock. It is 5 days upstream trip and four stars or five star cruises you can choose.
D3 on cruise
D4 on cruise
D5 on cruise
D6 Chongqing---Chengdu City (338 km)
At 09:00 arrive in Chaotianmen Dock of Chongqing City. Then take the train from Chongqing to Chengdu City lasting about 4 or 5 hours.
D7 Chengdu City –Jiuzhaigou Valley
Fly from Chengdu City to Jiuzhaigou Valley and then look around the Huanglong.
D8 look around Jiuzhaigou Valley.
D9 look around Jiuzhaigou Valley again and then fly from Jiuzhaigou to Chengdu City.
D10 Chengdu City--Xi’an City (842 km)
Take flight or train from Chengdu City to Xi’an City.

I presumed you only wanted to see the dam, and not go on the 3 Gorges cruise which IMHO is a big waste of time and money.
Joe above presumed you wanted to go on the cruise as well... most probably because he's a tour agent and thus promoting it!
There's no need to fly Jiuzhaigou -- Chengdu -- Xi'an, there're direct flights during summer and autumn for Jiuzhaigou -- Xi'an.

Thanks for the info Joezhou but a cruise is really what i'm after. Unless you give massive student discounts that is :-) ! Ellyse, honest opinions are always valid in my book!
