![]() | I'm planning a trip from Wutai Shan to Datong. 1. What is the best transport from Wutai Shan to Datong? I've heard, that some public busses pass the hanging temples, so we could stop there for a visit and continue later towards Datong. I've also heard that in Taihuai taxi-drivers offer tours towards Datong. Do you have any experiences in these options? 2. Is it possible to organize tours from Datong to the Great Wall? Are there nice spots of the Wall next to Datong? Better to do the trip on your own or better to join a organized tour? Are there organized tours to Yungang Grottoes and the Great Wall in one day? 3. Seems that most night trains to Beijing only pass Datong, don't start there. Does any body made exeriences if it's possible to get a soft sleeper ticket - or usually fully booked? So many questions. Thank you very much. |

![]() | 1) Hire a vehicle and driver for the day, and go from Wutaishan to Datong stopping at Yingxian Wooden Pagoda and Hanging Monastery enroute. I think it cost us about 500 RMB before May holidays, in 2007. 2) According to the Lonely Planet guidebook, "Datong lies between an inner and outer section of the Great Wall. The inner lies 100 km east, near the Hanging Monastery. The outer wall here parallels Shanxi's border with Inner Mongolia. It predates the much better-known Great Wall sites near Beijing. To get there, walk approximately 15 mins east of the Yungang Grottoes entrance." 3) Don't count on it. Go by bus instead. |
