I'm going to Hangzhou for a few days, and thinking about Shaoxing as well. Anyone been there, and if you had 4 full days how would you split them?

The distance from Hangzhou City to Shaoxing City is just about 63 km. So it is very easy to travel in Shaoxing City.
DAY1 Hangzhou City tour one day.
DAY2 Qiandao Lake (Thousand Islands Lake) tour one day.
DAY3 At morning take by shuttle bus from Hangzhou City to Shangxing City is about 1 hour and then Shaoxing City tour.
DAY4 Shaoxing City tour again and at afternoon take by shuttle bus to Hangzhou City.
The famous scenic-spots in Shaoxing City: Shenyuan Garden(RMB 30), Eastern Lake (RMB 40)and Lanting Park(RMB 40) etc.

Yuck, don't bother with the Thousand-Islands Lake, it's very touristy and expensive.
I would probably suggest 1-1.5 days for Shaoxing and spend the rest of the time in Hangzhou.

I agree with Ellyse about not bothering to go out to Thousand Island Lake... if you want to look at a lake and go out on a boat it may as well be in Hangzhou... not worth taking a day out to go to any other lake.

So much to do in Hangzhou that even if you spent all your time here you wouldn't see everything, see the tea villages is my special recommendation to you... look them up here: http://community.travelchinaguide.com/review2.asp?i=1145&keyword=

Also, if you want to try somewhere different, why not try Wuzhen, it's good for a day trip, very old waterside town...there's a review on it here: http://community.travelchinaguide.com/review2.asp?i=1018

I personally prefer Xitang over Wuzhen.

If want to get relax trip, we will suggest you to spend two days in hangzhou and then take side trip to Shaoxin. Shaoxin is a old city and deserve you to expore it.

Also pls remember not to spend time on transportation to catch more spots. Then you may miss beautiful scenery.

Enjoy!
