My gal told me the reason two of her friends did not come to our engagement party was because they were just married themselves. If I understood her correctly, a newly wed couple cannot attend another wedding within a year of their marriage. If I understood her correctly, what is the reason behind that custom?

Really? I haven't heard of such custom. Well, the custom may vary from place to place.

Haha kind of a late post but I have heard of this custom in my family. If you were just married, the elders usually say that its custom to not attend another wedding for a year. The year rule also applies if a sibling, cousin or uncle/aunt marries that you have to wait a year from there marriage date to get married yourself.

In my hometown, there isn't this type of custom. The newly-weds are allowed to attend as many weddings as they can.
