You can get a public bus from Beijing, 2 Yuan.

DO NOT PAY about 200 times more for a taxi!!

Downtown Backpackers runs an excellent day hike to Jinshanling-Simatai Great Wall: http://www.backpackingchina.com/nr/greatwall.html
For goodness sakes the public buses only go to the most touristy parts. None of them go to Jinshanling-Simatai which sounds more like what this person is looking for. Being a cheapskate might thrill you but it isn't necessarily the best or only way to travel.

I agree with Ellyse, stick with something like Simatai. I've also been to Badaling, which is a nightmare to find solitude, and Mutianyu. I personally liked Mutianyu which isn't near as busy as Badaling but also a bit shorter in length. With Simatai, however, I think you might have the ability to really venture off and find the solitude you seem to be looking for.

Obviously don't take a taxi...if you can't get anything through the backpackers website, any youth hostel you find will have a good selection of cheaper tours to different parts of the Wall.

Great spots on the Wall to go to? What do you mean?
Admission fee for Jinshanling and Simatai should be around 30 RMB for each section. Not sure about the others.
