I got conflicting information on the hotel. I read that it is a 3-Star hotel. It is similiar to the Peace Hotel. However, I alsoread that it is a hostel/dorm type of hotel.

I presume you're looking at Shanghai Astor House Hotel, also called Pujiang Hotel? Why not look at their own website (http://www.pujianghotel.com) and clear things up for yourself?
There're some very nice rooms there, which aren't cheap! It's around 4-star standard. I'm not sure if the dorm aspect of the hotel is still in operation.

Yes, I saw their website. They are expensive, but the guidebook gave a completely different price range.
