| The article China Faces Economical Aftershocks posted on Washington Post May 19 states that the aftershock on China’s economy is dramatic. Statistically speaking, most of China’s factories are not much affected. While the aftershock on economy can be lasting since after the Wenchuan Earthquake, workers become very gloomy and scared. In Sichuan Provinces, numerous factortries have to shut down. A number of workers have been living in the shadow of “5.12 Earthquake”.Some of them even believed in fatality. In the whole China, workers’ morale is very low. Some experts are concerned that China’s GDP growth will be largely affected by the earth. Will the GDP growth fall to a record low? How long will the economic aftershocks last in China? |

| In terms of the overall economy, I think the effect will be small. It is just a tiny part of China's productive capacity. Normally the rebuilding would boost the economy but as the economy is already overheated it might simply cause resources to be switched from elsewhere and add to inflation. The massive rebuilding in an overheated economy will mean it will take several years, but as it happens we should see increased vigour in the economy there. Rebuilt factories, for example. are likely to have newer and more efficient equipment. |
