Do you dress casually in your office? | |

Does the company you are working for have any special dressing codes for the employees? In winter, it is OK to ignore the dressing code. When summer comes, it is advisable to follow the dressing code. It is for the benefit of both you and your colleagues since the sweat and the odour will be terrible. What do you usually dress in office in summer? Can you wear a vest and a pair of shorts? I have seen many men wear shorts and vest when they are at offices? It is not decent. Wearing a pair of slipper is more annoying. For me, it seems to be sluttish. You need to look “professional” when you are working at your office. How do you dress in summer when you are at work?

Sunnydream: unfortunately there are some language problems in what you describe. Vest: in English this is the underwear beneath a shirt. In American and Australian it is the snall jacket under the main jacket in a 3 piece suit - in English a 'waistcoat'. In Australia, if it is dark blue it is colloquially caleld a 'wife beater'. I have not seen these warn to work in China, so are you thinking of a T shirt, a collarless shirt that is popular and happily rolled up by many young men to show a round belly? Personally I would never a collarless shirt, but the younger folks probably don't agree! In English, a slipper is a soft indoor shoe rarely seen in China. I recently heard a student refer to the footware that is little more than a rubber sole with a rubber strap inside the big toe as slippers, but in English they are called flip flops, in Australian 'thongs' ,and I am not sure what in American (but they are definitely not called 'thongs' there as this is a skimpy piece of women's underwear elsewhere known as a 'G string'. Don't worry if you are confused 'native English speakers' often are too! 'Sluttish' is probably not the word to use, that has a sexual meaning! Maybe use 'sloppy' instead. The dress code where I work, a small uni. The only rules I have been told are: no shorts, and no more than one shirt button undone at the chest. I think thongs are out too (except in the US meaning as no-one should know!!). In terms of your concerns for hygene and smell - I think the rules don't help you. Surely it would be better if we were allowed to wear shorts.

Apault, thanks for your correction! I am not an English-native speaker. I tried to improve my English. So I joined this community. Anyhow, you can understand what I mean. Are you allowed to wear shorts at work? My male colleagues are not allowed to wear shorts at office.

We have a very informal dress code at work unless there is a major meeting or conference. So informal that we can wear anything other than sleepwear or beach wear. However, if we want to command respect from others, it is a given that we should look respectable. On some occasions that we have to work weekends, we can even go to work wearing flip flops and shorts.

You can go to work wearing flip flops and shorts? I guess you are not working in service industry. The company I worked for has a strict dressing code.

I used to work for a bank before and we had company uniforms with heavy jackets complete with black leather shoes and stockings. I faced clients of various nationalities so it was important to project a professional image. There were office protocols to follow. I am in quality assurance now. I don’t face clients. I face directors, CEO, stockholders, auditors and people who work on the floor when I am checking things out. Even that, there is a very relaxed atmosphere at work. The company doesn’t require strict dress code if you are just doing your day to day job. I wear leather shoes and casual attires at work. Nothing stuffy or rigid. We can wear slacks or even jeans as long as they are presentable, not those deconstructed types. We don’t wear jeans during big meetings and conferences though. During audits we have to look formal and absolutely no jeans. We wear the flip flops and shorts only during weekends, that is if we have to come by for about a couple of hours or so especially during summer. I have my own office room at work. Who’s gonna see me on weekends? LOL!

Hello, A professional should look like a professional wearing shorts at work does not appear good business casuals is perfectly fine. Wear what is comfortable and respectable, wearing formals for long hours could be difficult support semi formals it will look good and stylish. Regards, sarah_9 Customsuitsshirts
