What is the "drinking age" in your country?

guestdrink What is "the drinking age" in your country? I mean, at what age one could legally buy and possess alcohol in public? Or does China have such a regulation? I saw a lot of Chinese underage drink at a restaurant. How about other countries? If you are 18 years old, are you allowed to drink alcohol since 18 often marks that you are an adult?Does any culture view alcohol as totally illegal?

The last questionis the easiest part. Some Muslim countries make alcohol totally illegal.

I am surprised you saw many 'underage' people drinking in a restaurant. Very few girls drink alcohol. Many of my 20 yr old male students also do not drink, or just have a taste. Many young people are happy to have 'parties' with no alcohol.

I hope you will get the legal answer from someone else.. I am not sure.

In the U.S.A. States set their drinking ages and some counties in some states are "dry" meaning alchoholic beverages are not allowed to be sold. States regulate sales too by requiring a license to sell liquor. I live in the State of New Hampshire in the U.S.A. and liquor stores are run by the State. No private sales of liquor and in restaurants it can be sold only by the glass and then the restaurant must have a license. If a restaurant is found selling to underage people, their license is revoked and a cash fine is imposed. The legal drinking age is 21.
Beer and wine are sold in licensed shops along with food products.
Underage drinking is a serious offense as is drinking and driving a car.
In China, apparently no licenses are needed but culturally drinking to excess rare.

GUEST2245 In the USA, if you are 18 years old, you are entitled to elect the president, you can become a soldier and die for your country, but you cannot buy a drink until you are 21. Does that make sense?

In Finland drinking age is 18. Selling alcohol, exept beer, is centralized to state liquor stores. 18 yo can buy mild alcohol e.g. beer and wines, to buy over 20% alcohol must be 21.
In restaurants can buy strong drinks when 18 yo.

Kids start drinking much before 18 yo. There are always people who buy booze to under aged. Even some parents does it.

Though drinking is very controlled in Finland, it is usual to drink to get drunk here. So called social drinking is more rare here, although it is changing.

GUEST7689 Did someone know a national campaign called Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD)? Before 1933, American prohibited alcohol for a while.

In 1933, the "drinking age was set at 21 in most states in America. Between 1970 and 1975, during the second half of the Vietnam War, many states decided to lower it to 18, 19 or 20.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) is a national campaign aiming to raise the minimum drinking age. The movement was launched by a mother whose 13-year-old daughter was killed by a drunk driver in May 1980. Although the driver was in his 40s, the result of the movement was that all 50 states passed the National Minimum Drinking Age Act in 1984, raising that age to 21.
