China has two or three internet service providers. China Unicom and China Telecom are the two major providers

If you are living in a residential building, chances are that it is wired for internet Broadband. Ask at the building office and your landlord for assistance.

Then you will need your address, a passport for ID and the connection fee which is anything from RMB600 plus per year depending on the service you require. If this is the first time you have opened an internet account you may have to wait one week for the connection and you pay the cash at the end of this waiting period, not before.

Choose a suer name and a password which must be numeric not alphabetic.

Ask a friend to help you if you don't speak any Chinese. If they cannot accompany you personally ask someone to write you a note to take with you.

This was my experience. I did it myself with the help of a few phone calls to colleagues to translate.
All the best

Hi there,

in about a month I will goto Xi'An for about 2 years.

What I need is an internet broadband connection ... suitable for voice over ip connections and VPN.
These VPN and VoIP servers are located in Europe.

So far I know Chinese Telecom is the only provider in this field who can give you a fast access to international sites and computers (if you are a foreigner)

Does someone has more info on this?

I have heard that - in most cases - chinese internet speed is poor when it comes to international connections.

So ... does someone has a recommendation for me?

I will live in the center of Xi'an.

All the best

Tom
