Why do they "回娘家"?
Jun 2, 2008 03:37
guest5653 My Chinese friend told me that Chinese wives usually got back to their moms' home if they quarrelled or fought with their husbands. In Chinese, they usually said that the wives "回娘家了 (Hui 2 Niang 2 Jia Le)". Several days later, the husbands went to their mother-in-law's home to take their wives back home. I wonder why they come back to their moms' home when they quarrel or fight with their husbands. Anyone here can explain this to me?

GUEST08933 it is normal in china, there is something with chinese culture. if they quarrel or fight ,wives are angry enough they do not want to live with their husband for a while it always happens. because they think it is a good place to stay and they can tell anything makes her unhappy. when husbands want their wives back, they have to go to their mother-in-law's home, when they arrive they are offen scolded by the members As a result they have to apologize to their wives and promise never do it again.

They do promise that they won't do it again but actually they still make the same mistake again and again. When his wife goes to her mom's home again, he apologizes and takes her home. I am wondering if their apology is very useful. Why do they break their promise again and again?

"Why do they break their promise again and again? "

Cherry, because they are the same with women, always changeable. Seriously, quarreling and fighting are unavoidable. Did you see any couple who never quarrel or fight? At least I haven't seen such a model couple. Do you know a Chinese saying---床头打,床尾合? Although the couple quarrel or fight with each other, they have to sleep at the same bed at night. Sometimes, quarreling or fighting can reinforce the realationship between the husband and the wife.

My sister's brother-in-law had a short marriage here in the U.S. He and his wife had an argument and the wife stormed back to her parents. Her parents took her side against the husband.
the general concensus was that the parents should have told their daughter "you are married now. You must go back and work it out." Marriage takes work and there are bound to be disagreements. If the wife knows she can run away to the shelter of mommy and daddy, she will not work at the marriage.

"Her parents took her side against the husband."

No doubt, they took her side because she was their child.Yinduffy, actually few parents can do what you have said, telling their chidlren that they have to go back to solve the problem. Most of the parents, especially the mom, stand by her children's side no matter they are wrong or right. They have to understand that the children must grow up and learn to deal with the problem by themselves. Haven't they ever thought this question---If they were gone, where do their children go?
