Dowry is the property that the bride brings to her husband in marriage. What are the popular dowries nowadays? Jewelries and gems? Any other accessories? Do you buy expensive dowry for your daughter? In rural China, fathers buy home appliance for their daughters including washing machines, refrigerators and dishwashers. What are the usual dowries in your hometown?

In the U.S., the tradition of the dowry only exists in the tradition of the girls parents paying for the wedding and wedding reception. This usually only applies to a formal Church wedding with the reception right afterwards. The cost of the reception can easily run into several thousands of dollars and about 200 guests might be seated. The guests usually bring gifts in the form of money which they present in envelopes during the dinner. The parents of both Bride and Groom usually give a cash gift to their children too. This money is to help the newlyweds get started in life together.
With modern times, there are many variables. A civil service wedding without a reception may not bring very much in the way of wedding gifts at all. A second marriage may not bring any gifts from parents. Adults getting married later in life may not get gifts.
A lot has to do with the financial status of the parents.

WCTMAN, do you mean that the parents do not give any doweries to their daughters? I can't believe it. In my hometown, the parents at least should give brand-new quilts to their daughters.
