Summer Palace & Beihai or Chengde

If I have only 3 days in Beijing and during my 3rd day, I can have a choice of Summer Palace and Beihai or leave them out and make a day trip to Chengde.

The transportation trouble aside, which is more enjoyble for sight-seeings ?

I will like to hear from those who visited both places.

I would opt for Summer Palace so that I could maximise the amount of time available for sightseeing. I believe Chengde is a number of hours away from Beijing each way. Possible to do as a daytrip but quite rushed.
