Japan and China have made a deal for the joint exploration of a gas field in the East China Sea. Japan and China have a long dispute over the development of gas fields in the East China Sea.

In 2003, China began drilling in Chuanxiao (known as Shirakaba in Japan), which caused fear in Japan that China could siphon gas from Japanese fields. Both Japan and China contests that the gas field falls within their own maritime zones. After the deal was done, a small group of Chinese protesters denounced the deal. The spokeswoman of China’s foreign ministry Jiang Yu stated that the agreement didn’t harm the respective legal stance of both sides.”
