What are your countrymen interested in now?

I stumbled upon an article “The David Harrison on China: Return to Beijing”. The author detailed the changes of Beijing in the past 25 years. He made a contrast between the image of Beiing in 1984 and the new image in 2008. He said in his article : “Spitting is still an art form, getting on the bus a survival skill. But the new Beijing - with its fast cars, shiny buildings and designer clothes - is a different world.” One thing he described in his article convinces me a lot: “today the atmosphere (in China) is more relaxed, the state is less intrusive and most Chinese people are more interested in making money than playing politics.” True enough! Chinese people are more interested in making money than playing politics. There are no more “red guards” and no “Cultural Revolution”. People become less concerned with politics. Making money is the rife belief in the whole China. This is the scenario in China. How about the situation in other parts of the world? Where are you from and what are your countrymen intereted in now?

In other parts of the world, making money is just a way to make a living, nothing more, nothing less. They believe in enjoying life because life is short. They believe that when you leave this world, you cannot take it with you. They have hobbies and interests. They spend time with their families and friends and couldn’t wait for the weekends. Some couldn’t care less if they have less in life as long as they are happy. You will see this in countries that are not considered ‘competitive’. This is because they see work as just a way to make money, not a career and certainly not the alpha and omega of all things. Their life doesn’t revolve around their work. They live a full social life and have a very low suicide rate. They couldn’t understand why people in rich countries get depressed and gobble prozac, while at the same time these rich people look down on them for being poor and wonder why they won’t compete.

You will care about politics if you know how politics work. However, most people believe politics has nothing to do with them so they try to avoid it. Most people anywhere will not be concerned about politics until it hits home, that is, until you get personally affected and you feel the ‘pain’.

I can't agree more with you. " Making money is just a way to make a living." Money is important for life, but money is not the ultimate goal of life." We need to find out what we live for.
