The controversial South China photos by farmer Zhou Zhenglong were proved fake, according to media at a press conference of the Shaanxi Provincial government on June 29, 2008.

Zhou Zhenglong, who was a 53-year-old farmer from the Zhenping county of Shaanxi Province, claimed that he had photographed the endangered South China tiger with a digital camera on the afternoon of Octor 3, 2007. The Shannxi Provincial Forestry Deparment rewarded him 20,000 Yuan (2,915 U.S. dollars) after “investigation” on October 12, 2007. On June 29,2008, the reward was revoked and Zhou Zhenglong was accused of swindling.

The “South China tiger photos” scandal has been in controversy and unsettled for more than half a year. Yesterday, the Shaanxi Government announced the result of the investigation into the scandal. The police said the photo was fake. 13 local officials were punished for involving the scandal.

What's up with all the fake photos? Isn’t there another guy who also faked a photo of the train and the Tibetan antelopes months ago?

Shesgottobe,

The faked photos of Tibetan antelope were released in February this year. The faked pictures were made by Liu Weiqing, a journalist (photographer) in Daqing Evening News. The 41-year-old photographer admitted that he pieced together two photos into one to show over 20 Tibetan antelopes roaming peacefully under a bridge of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway. He faked the pictures for a photo contest.

Ironically, the faked photo, named "Qinghai-Tibet Railway opening green passageway for wild animals", was among the "10 most impressive news photos of 2006", an annual event sponsored by state media China Central Television (CCTV). Chinese netizens suspect the authenticity of the picture and pointed out that the highlighted parts of the picture was unnatural.
