Traveling with food allergies in China

guest86023 I'm traveling to China in August - Hong Kong and Beijing - and I have food allergies to gluten and dairy. I'd like to know if travelers are allowed to carry some of their own food into the country in their luggage? Also, is wheat free soy sauce available in Hong Kong? And if anyone has any other tips for avoiding foods with gluten and dairy while in China?

Yes you can bring food into China. Not sure about HK but you can try anyway.

It is quite easy to avoid both dairy and gluten products in China since dairy is not a staple and you can substitute with rice and soya for noodles. Many of the noodles are made from other plants like sweet potato and I hear you can find buckwheat noodles too although I have yet to discover where.

Just avoid any breads and pastry items because they are usually made with highly refined gluten flours.

I think you may print a slip of paper and show it every time when you dine at the restaurants. It says "我对芝麻以及葵花籽过敏!"
