The No.2-ranked Rafael Nadal conquered the No. 1 defended champion Roger Federer in the Wimbledon Finale yesterday.
It was a great match between the two greatest tennis players of the current generation. Nadal claimed his first Winbledon champion by slightest margins, 6-4, 6-4, 6-7, 6-7, 9-7.

During the first two sets, Federer lost his usual form and lost the two sets by 6-4, 6-4. Yesterday’s match has some significance for both Federer and Nadal. Whoever won the match would make a history. Federer was trying his best to become the fist man win six consecutive Winbledon championships since the 1880s. Nadal shattered Federer’s dream. The vitory was significant for Nadal too. He became the first man since Bjorn Borg in 1980 to win Wimbledon and the French Open in the same season. .

Thanks Nadal and Federer for the greatest match they dedictated to the spectators! There was no loser in yesterday’s finale. Both of them were heroes in Winbledon!

Very good summary of the match Iceberg.

It will go down as a classic match in tennis history.
I was hoping for Roger to win and he almost did, it was so close, but
as you said it was a high quality match that either man could have won.

Interestingly, light became a factor towards the very end because the match was so long.
Neither man could see the ball very well the last few games.

You mentioned records. Another record was that this was the longest match in Wimbledon history!

Actually, Federer had many opportunities to win the champion. However, he didn't grasp any. In the second set, Federer once had a lead of 4 to 1. But he wasted many chances and finally lost the second set. To be honest, I was disappointed by his performance. One strange thing was that Federer couldn't deal with Nadal's second serve very well. He lost many points just because of Nadal's second serve. Also he seldom grasps breakpoints to beat Nadal. On contrary, Nadal did very well to break Federer's service. For Federer, his big serves helped him a lot. He won several games just by his big serves. Brilliant.

However, I was delighted to see that Federer didn't give up and continued to fight. Although, he lost the first two sets, he still tried to win. And he won the third and the forth sets. Anyway, Federer had tried his best to win the match. Unfortunately, Nadal performed excellently, beating him and winning the title.

Roger seemed a little bit sad.

Very good summary Kevin. You covered all the important points of the match.
As you said Federer had many opportunities to go ahead and win the match but he didn't rise to the occasion.

The most disappointing for me was his very poor service break record and total unforced error count.
As you mentioned, many of his unforced errors occurred when he was receiving second serves from Nadal. Hit these second serves into the middle of the net was just inexcusable. They are symptomatic of mental lapses. He just wasn't as well focused as Nadal was. This has been a recurring problem for Federer for quite some time now.

He can get away with it with almost every other player on the tour, but with Nadal he pays the price dearly.

Canadaguy, another thing that we should pay attention to is that Nadal is a lefty. When hitting the ball back to Federer, it usually goes to Roger's backhand. According to my observation, those right handed players usually have weak backhand. Federer is no exception though his backhand is excellent.

And we have to admit that Nadal has made great progress in recent years. It is the third time that Nadal and Federer have met in the final of Wimbledon. In 2006, Nadal won one set and two sets in 2007. This time, he successfully beat Federer 3 to 2. What’s more, he has improved his speed of serving balls. In the final, he made 9 (? I couldn’t remember it clearly) ACEs. Really great. Nadal has grown up to a professional tennis player.

By the way, do you think that Federer was influenced by his failure in France, Canadaguy?

Yes Kevin it is true what you say about playing against lefties. It is always more difficult for righties to cope with the problem.

There is no question that Nadal's game has improved overall in the past few years.
Federer will have to overcome many obstacles if he is to beat Nadal in the future.

>>By the way, do you think that Federer was influenced by his failure in France, Canadaguy?

No I don't think that match had any influence on his game at Wimbledon.
He lost due to a combination of factors that we have mentioned plus the poor light conditions near the end when they were almost playing in the dark. Apparently it was much darker than what was broadcast on TV. They can increase the lighting for the TV viewers (but not for the players).

It will be interesting to see how Federer manages to plays at the U.S. Open.
For me, his biggest hurdle now is trying to keep focused for every point, the entire match, like Nadal can do.

Haha, I am a lefty. When I play badminton with my friend, I find that their backhands are not good. Thus, I intentionally attack their backhands. According to my experience, the lefties often have strong backhands. For me, I can handle them easily if my friends try to attack my backhand.

Agree. But Federer might meet Nadal again during Beijing Olympic Games. Who do you think will win?

That would be a tough one to call. I know Federer has expressed a keen interest to attend the Olympics.
Has Nadal also confirmed that he will attend?

The Canadian Open tennis tournament will be held next week (Jul 21-27) in Toronto.
I'm thinking of attending one day of matches. I used to attend the tournament a long time ago (in the early 90's). It would be quite remarkable to see Federer or Nadal up close (if they choose to play there this year). Last year Djokovic won.

Yes, Canadaguy. Federer, Nadal and Djokovic will attend the Olympics. But Roddick has said that he will give up Beijing Olympic Games for he is going to prepare for US Open. As for women's, Sharapova, Ivanovic, Williams Sisters, Davenport, Safina etc will also appear at Beijing Olympic Games.

Canadaguy, you once played professional tennis. Surprisingly! Don't know if Federer and Nadal will appear in Toronto. When will Toronto Tournament begin, Canadaguy? If you join in the tournament, I perhaps can see you in TV, hehe.

As I was writing my last message I thought you might misinterpret what I was saying.
Of course you can attend a tournament as a player OR as a spectator. I was simply a
spectator in the early 90's.

Although I enjoy playing tennis very much, I am far past my prime for a professional career and my skill level was never at the professional level.

The first round begins on Monday Jul 21. If I attend, you may be able to catch me in the stands! :)

Sorry, Canadaguy. To be honest, I am actually a football fan. However, having been taking with your for so long, I have become a tennis fan (although I can't play tennis).

Hehe, I thought I need a telescope if I wanted to find you in the stands. Unfortunately, I couldn't go to Tronoto to watch the matches. Anyway, if the TV broadcasts Toronoto Tournament, I will watch it.
