Yesindeed: High up on this page (above the ad) you will see a small icon/tab for flights and one for trains, You should be able to do your own comparisons. If you cannot find your flights in here try CTRIP. Remember that buying train tickets is not always easy, you sometimes have to book a few days ahead. To book trains in advance I would use a travel agent, though there is a fee. I travel slowly so I can normally book my own

Definitely quicker but not necessarily more time-economical.
If you get a fare of about 500 RMB plus 200 RMB tax, that's usually quite a good discount already.

GUEST50231 What is the difference between the D trains, the X trains and the T trains when traveling from Shanghai to Beijing. What would be mot recommended for a person on a budget that doesn't want to be TOO uncomfortable (ie: I would like air conditioning and a soft seat to sit on) I would really truly appreciate a response to my email dal.ca|smcnaugh

Thank you.

There're no X trains, did you perhaps refer to the Z trains? These are no longer running for the Shanghai -- Beijing route.
For your requirements, you might want to consider the daytime D train. Seats go for 452/542 RMB for 2nd/1st-class each way, journey time 9.5 hours.
Otherwise, if you want to go overnight, take the T trains which take 13.5 hours. If you're lucky enough to get hard sleeper (usually very difficult to get) then it would cost 306/317/327 for upper/middle/lower bunk. Otherwise, the soft sleeper would cost 478/499 RMB for upper/lower bunk.

I believe deluxe 2-bunk soft sleeper for this route is only available on the T104 and T110 trains which take 13.5 hours. Are you sure? I think they cost >100 USD each, but can't remember the exact amount at the moment.
If you need me to help with buying those tickets, email me at yahoo.com|ellyse99 and put "TravelChinaGuide" in the subject line, thanks.
