According to WTO, China is possible to exceed Germany, becoming the world's biggest exporter this year. As WTO's report reveals, China has replaced Canada to be US's biggest source of imported commodities.

"If China export can keep 20 percent increase, it is likely that China will replace Germany to be the biggest exporter in the world. " A source of China's Commerce Ministry.

In the first half of this year, China's export volume has increased by 21.9 percent to 666.6 billion dollars, which is 5.7 percent lower compared with the same period last year. In June, China's exportation has only increased by 17.6 percent,

China might replace Germany as the worlds biggest exporter providing that China can maintain a lower cost per unit because of lower labor costs or offer a greater variety of goods to export.
However, to maintain or increase China's % of export volume may be rather difficult to maintain as the increase in the cost of oil will hamper the economies of Europe, U.S. and other countries that are importing the Chinese goods. And right now the U.S. economy is sick, and it just doesn't have a cough....it's got pneumonia.

Gary, we (Chinese) know where we are. Labor intensive export oriented economy will exist for quite a while and will continue weigh much in GDP. Perhaps we can learn and absorb German engineering, but the most massive population and average education/training level don't allow us compete with German tech/capital intensive economy. We dont' belong to G8 or G10.(Boasting is no good)

numbers, just numbers!! What is to be proud of when all that money doesn't profit to all in the country but a few rich men? when the bigger numbers just mean more people earning salaries barely high enough to bring food on the table?

And all this is at what cost? Let's stop doe a moment and thing what that growth is doing to Chinese environement; are you still proud of all that economic success? I am not that much...

Al32,

Traditional industries are migrating from developed economices seeking low labor costs in the developing economies. Thus pollution -intensity is accompanied by industry specification based on comparative advantages.

It is questionable if it's profitable to seek mass out put via mass input accounting for the enviromental pollution.

It'll be interesting to see how china filters the secondary industry to the poorer area and transform those field labor/factory labor to office labors. That needs extraordinary wisdom and exploration because we have got 1.3 billion people not 30,000,000.
