I want to catch a train from Guangzhou to Hong Kong, Do i need to buy a ticket in advance or can i just arrive at the station on the day and purchase one.

On-the-spot should be fine, assuming you're not travelling during major holidays.

You'll find that Friday and Sunday evenings are very busy with commuters. At all other times you should be ok. Will cost between HK$190 - $230. You should plan to arrive at the station about 30 minutes before scheduled departure, as customs can take some time.
