| Hello Zoey, That is my granddaughter's name. I really like it. Those are good phrases, but can you add some that would help if I went into a small Beijing restaurant where no one speaks much English??? How to order bottled water? How to order beer? How to order some dishes that would go with my Western appetite?? beef, chicken, noodles, dumplings, soup I will probably pass on the centipedes, grasshoppers, scorpions, eel, but I really enjoy seafood, so I hope to try starfish and some other fish. I have a hard time with the tofu and jelly-like dishes and bean curd. I eat most of the veggies, though. How about: may we have our check/bill? how much is it? that was a very good meal...........thank you for your service and how do you call the 'waiter' or 'waitress' to your table without being rude and just raising your hand????? much thanks, Frank |

| Hi, Frank. If you want to order bottled water, you can say " 您(nín)好(hǎo),请(qǐng)问(wèn)你(nǐ)们(men)这(zhè)里(lǐ)有(yǒu)纯(chún)净(jìng)水(shuǐ)(瓶(píng)装(zhuāng)水(shuǐ))吗(ma)?" As for ordering beer, you just need to say "服(fú)务(wù)员(yuán),来(lái)瓶(píng)啤(pí)酒(jiǔ)" If you want more, you can say "服(fú)务(wù)员(yuán),来(lái)两(liǎng)瓶(píng),三(sān)瓶(píng),四(sì)瓶(píng)…..啤(pí)酒(jiǔ)." To order dishes: 请(qǐng)问(wèn)你(nǐ)们(men)这(zhè)里(lǐ)的(de)招(zhāo)牌(pái)菜(cài)是(shì)什(shén)么(me)? What's the specialty here? 请(qǐng)问(wèn)你(nǐ)们(men)这(zhè)里(lǐ)有(yǒu)饺(jiǎo)子(zi),面(miàn)条(tiáo)….吗(ma)? If you want to have noodles, dumplings, you can say this. If you want to pay the bill, just say "服(fú)务(wù)员(yuán),结(jié)帐(zhàng)” If you think they offered a good meal to you, you can say "你(nǐ)们(men)这(zhè)儿(er)的(de)饭(fàn)菜(cài)很(hěn)可(kě)口(kǒu)." To call the "waiter" or "waitress", just say"服(fú)务(wù)员(yuán)“. Remember not call waitress "小(xiǎo)姐(jiě)" . Well, actually most restaurants in Beijing will offer English menus to the foreigners so that don't worry about ordering food. |
