Hi, I will be travellin to China for 10 days, looking to spend
about 6 days in Beijing and 4 days in Xian. Any recommendation
for hotels in Xian? I am actually leaning towards the Sheraton.
But not sure if it's a good choice. Also, what is the best way to
travel from Beijing to Xian? I would like to take a train outbound
from Beijing to Xian, and fly from Xian back to Beijing. How
much would that cost? Is it easy to get train and air tickets in
China, or should I get it from here?

Hotel in Xi'an: Sheraton has rather good facilities as well as service, but not ideally located. I'll suggest the Hyatt Regency Hotel rightly located inside the City Wall for your reference, which is just 5 minutes walk to the city center - Bell and Drum Tower.

How is the Sheraton? Location, service and rooms?

Sheraton is a newly built hotel, will need half an hours drive to the very center of the city. Their rooms are more spacious with better facilities than Hyatt. What's more, they have a swiming pool which is very rare among the 5-star hotels in Xi'an (owing to the lack of water there). While Hyatt, built for more than 10 years, facilities are rather old, their only advantage is the location.
Another choice is Howard Johnson Ginwa Plaza Hotel(5-star) near the south gate of the City Wall. I know their deluxe rooms with about the same rate with the standard rooms of Sheraton, are rather comfortable.

Actually ,either service or rooms of Sheraton is the best in Xi'an, but the location is not so advantaged. It is located on the west surburb of the city where you need spend about 30 min to drive to the downtown.

What are the modes of transport within the city, besides taxis
and buses? How much does it cost to travel from Sheraton to
downtown area?

NO other mode. the best way is to take a taxi, since the taxi fee is so cheap in Xi'an. From Sheraton to downtown area, it will take you about 15 yuan, say, no more than USD2.00
