Hi All,
I have 4 days (a part of my trip to Yunnan) and start from Kunming. I would like to do a round trip Kunming-Jiuxiang-Dongchuan-Yuanmou-Kunming. I think there are buses connecting those locations, but don't know if they match my below plan:
D1: Kunming-Jiuxiang. Sightsee Jiuxiang cave (3 hours). Back to Kunming.
D2: Kunming-Dongchuan. Afternoon sightsee Red Earth.
D3: Morning sightsee Red Earth. Afternoon transfer to Yuanmou.
D4: Sightsee Yuanmou. Afternoon back to Kunming.

Can anyone help to comment on my plan in terms of sightseeing time, bus route, accomodation...
The most important thing to me now is the time of the last buses from Jiuxiang to Kunming, Dongchuan to Yuanmou and Yuanmou to Kunming.

Thank you for any assistance .

The Yuanmou -- Kunming bus route is simply awful. For your own comfort and sanity, please take the trains instead. Although be warned, their timings are all very strange.
The last Yuanmou -- Kunming bus leaves around 1700.

Thanks Ellyse. You have been to Yuanmou Soil Forest and Jiuxiang. What do you think about those 2 places? Are they really worthwhile visiting?
I just found out that there is no bus from Dongchuan to Yuanmou, so I have to come back to Kunming and then go to Yuanmou later. It really takes our time, is Yuanmou Soil Forest beautiful enough? If yes, what time and what number is the train from Kunming to Yuanmou (return) as you recommended?
Look forward to hearing from you.

No, I haven't been to Jiuxiang. Where did you read that I have?
Yuanmou soil forest had no one else in there when we went. The tourist infrastructure is at best, half done. If you're looking to get off the beaten path, this would be it. It's a little overpriced though.
Here're the train timings, both ways.

Kunming -- Yuanmou:
2648 (0731--1211) 4h40min
6162 (0743--1517) 7h34min
K114 (1223--1626) 4h03min
K166 (1805--2202) 3h57min
K146 (1958--2358) 4h00min
Yuanmou -- Kunming:
2647 (0109--0544) 4h35min
K113 (0338--0758) 4h20min
K165 (0551--1020) 4h29min
K145 (0646--1109) 4h23min
6161 (1025--1758) 7h33min

Thanks Ellyse for your valuable help. During my info search for Jiuxiang and Yuanmou at Thorntree forum (LP), I found your plan for Yunnan trip in February which included both these 2 locations. And I therefore thought that you've been to both.

It seems that there are many soil forests in Yuanmou, which one did you visit?
We plan to go to Lanbapu Soil Forest ( 浪巴铺土林 ) in Xinhua Town.
Do you know if there is any shuttle bus between Yuanmou and the Lanbapu Soil Forest.
And lastly, could you please kindly recommend us a hostel/hotel in Yuanmou with the name and address in Chinese character so that I can show to the taxi driver? We prefer budget accomodation ( less than rmb200 for 3 persons ).

Thank you in advance and look forward to hearing from you.

No, we didn't go to Jiuxiang in the end.
I think we went to the main Yuanmou soil forest, although I know of the others. We only had a few hours anyway. We hired a minivan so I don't know if there're public buses.
Neither did we stay overnight, so I can't recommend anything. I did notice that there were some accommodation options near Yuanmou train station which looked like they would be inexpensive, but I don't know anything about the conditions nor prices.
