Here is the deal, my friend Ben and me are traveling from Beijing to Huangshan (tunxi) on probably the 14th of october (tuesday) and flying from huangshan (tunxi) to shanghai on the 16th of october (at night). should i try to buy airfare online before i go or is it really more wise to buy tickets in china because of signficant discounts available? for instance, i found airfare from beijing to huangshan for 850CNY (not yet priced airfare to shanghai) but have heard you can get tickets in china for 40% off the price online and that its dumb to buy online. please help! and thanks to everyone who has given me such INCREDIBLE information on my previous posts!

If the 850RMB includes tax, then that will already be a discounted price. I'll be surprised if you get it for less than 600. Most people I know who buy air tickets in China, buy online anyway, as they offer the same discounts as agents. If you are 100% sure you want to go on that date, rather than wait in case you change your plans, then I would book it now. The later you leave it, the more seats get sold, and the discount disappears.

The train probably is more convenient, but you can buy the ticket yourself!

so does anyone think i'll be able to find a flight from beijing to huangshan for less than 850RMB?

That is a good price... I cannot do better than 870 rmb.. There is only one direct train a day, dep 11.46, and the trip takes 19 hours. A sleeper costs from 300 to 500 rmb, so flying seems fair value. There is the added difficulty of not always being able to get a ticket for the train you want and so having to delay a few days.
