Will a misdemeanor in the US keep you from getting a visa?

guest55564	hello! i was looking at the visa application form and have found that they ask about a criminal record in china or other countries. if i have a misdemeanor offense for marijuana possession in the US from 2006 with an otherwise clean record, does anyone know how this will affect my visa application for travel in september 2008? does anyone know if they do a background check? would it better my chances to go to the embassy myself to explain the situation or have a service or chinatown travel agent do it? any insight, advice is appreciated! thanks
