10 day China in late December early January
Aug 10, 2008 12:38
guest52571 We are planning a trip to China at the end of December. I know that we will be landing in Shanghai from there we would like to use the train to go counterclockwise through Beijing, Xian, then to somewhere warm.
My questions are:
is there a good beach location to visit?
Which area of the Great Wall would be nice in winter?
What are some other scenic off the beaten track cities to visit?
Are the trains easy to navigate?

Sanya, Qingdao and Dalian are probably China's most famous beach spots. Only Sanya will be at a "beach" temperature during December though. You should also note that China's beaches are not its forte and cannot compare to other global locations eg South-East Asia or Caribbean.
Are you looking for a longer hike, or just to see the Great Wall?
How many days do you have in total? Where is your point of exit?
Trains are relatively easy to navigate, but you might have problems getting train tickets. January is when almost all of the Chinese population will be heading home for the Chinese New Year (aka Spring Festival) reunion dinner and holidays.

GUEST52571 Thank you for the information.
Hiking might be fun on the Great Wall, but won't it be cold?
We might not go to the beach, is there a town in the south that would be welcoming, and warm?

We land and exit from Shanghai, and the total number of days in China will be 10.
Do you suggest a Yangtze river tour?

Thanks again.

Hiking on the Great Wall in December not better because of very cold. In December in Beijing the average low temperature is about --8 degree (about 17.6F) and on the Great Wall the temperature would be low than in city.
In December i suggest you travel to the southern of China. In souther of China there are many Old Ancient Town like Zhujiajiao in Shanghai, Tongli, Zhouzhuang, Jinxi, Luzhi, Mudu, Fengqiao in Jiangsu, Xitang, Wuzheng, Nanxun in Zhejiang, Hongcun, Xidi in Anhui, Fenghuang, Furong in Hunan.
In December the cruise may be stopped and not the best time for sightseeing.

Wrap yourself up warmly and you won't be cold. Besides you might actually find it warm as your body generates heat during exercise.
No, I do NOT recommend the 3 Gorges cruise in any season, least of all winter. If you want my full report and candid photos, please email me at yahoo.com|ellyse99 and put "TravelChinaGuide" in the subject line, thanks!
How "warm" do you want it to be? I would probably suggest Xiamen.

Xiamen is about as warm as you will get on the mainland, but it's not a coastal city in the sense you might be thinking. The island of Gulangyue is very nice for a couple of days but you might not find heated rooms, and certainly not heated restaurants. The mean temp for Jan is just 13C . Sanya in southern Hainan is the warmest place in 'mainland China' with a mean temp of 21C.

GUEST52571 Thanks so much for all the great info. I think we will skip the 3 Gorges tour! Thank you for telling me your recommendations.

I think we are looking into Guilian and Yangshou. We might do a ride on the Li River. We want a small boat with less crowds.
Any thoughts?

Guilin, not Guilian. Do the bamboo rafting on the Yulong River, not Li River. Look on http://www.yangers.com for more information.
