According to the report, thousands of drain covers in Britain have been stolen recently. In Warwickshire, 220 drain covers were stolen just in four nights in April. 268 have been stolen in Surrey since then. In order to replace the new drain cover, the British taxpayers need to pay millions of pounds a year. Each costs about 300 pounds. No wonder the thieves steal the drain covers. The thieves just steal the drain covers and then sell them to make money. Meanwhile, the thefts of petrol, diesel and heating oil have risen sharply over the past year in the face of rocketing fuel prices.

Yes, stolen manhole covers have been reported in the U.S. too. Scrap metal prices are high and thieves are active. Interestingly, high scrap iron prices have been attributed to the increased use of iron and steel in China's building boom!

I heard the alternative transportation tools- bicycle are being stolen more often than before. And stealing drainage covers happened in China, how come British people just think of it as a way of making money...I know some chinese businessmen are making big propfits right now from recycling business abroad. i,e, shipping steel/iron from damaged cars to China...

The theft of drain covers also happens in China. In previous years, the theives stole the drain covers and sold them like scrap metal. They even cut the railways and stole rail spikes. To protect the drain covers, people even equip locks to them.

I find it hard to believe that drain covers can cost 300 pounds even at Britain's exteremely high prices. Sure they are easy to remove and sell for scrap, but they would not cost that much to replace. If I am wrong, what an opportunity for a Chinese manufacturer/exporter. Big profit margin!

Paul, I think that Chinese manufacturer and exporters are not lucky enough to make profits in UK because it has the same problem. As Cherry said, some Chinese steal drain covers too. To solve this thoroughly, the government should punish those who steal drain covers and spikes severely. Also those who buy drain covers and railway spike should be punished too.
