Associated Press reported that 4143 American soldiers have died in Iraq up to August 16. A considerable number of the deceased solidiers were killed by the rivals’ sudden shots. The new M-110 sniper rifle does not have a high accuracy of shooting. Soldiers preferred the old M-24 sniper rifle. It is hard to believe that the new M-110 sniper rifle can not match the old M-24 sniper rifle.

The U.S M-24 sniper rifle is bolt action while the M-110 rifle is semi-automatic. Both are 7.62x51mm NATO caliber. You can tell by their designations that the M-24 is an older design. It is based on a commercial target rifle ( the Remington 700). The newer M-110 is based on the M-16 type action ( actually AR-10) and is very similar in function. The M-110 is made capable of attaching various sights and gizmos like night sights, infrared etc. Target shooters and snipers tend to be very conservative and they probably prefer to keep the old reliable guns and telescopic sights that they trained on years ago. It may take some time before the "new-fangled" M-110 proves itself.
The U.S. forces in Irag and Afghanistan have encountered very few actual enemy snipers. The bad guys just point and spray with their AK-47s. Most have not had formal training in accurate shooting.
U.S. casualties are primarily from IEDs ( Improvised Explosive Devices) either in car bombs or roadside bombs. Gunshot wounds have traditionally been only responsible for a small percentage of fatalities in combat.
U.S. marksmen have been very good at singling out and killing bad guys who take pot shots at coalition troops.

GUEST81175 How can a gas operated semi-automatic rifle be as accurate as a bolt action rifle?

A gas operated rifle's action does not begin to function until after the bullet has left the muzzle. The puff of gas that operates the action is behind the bullet and only starts unlocking the breech after the bullet is away. This means that the movement of the bolt and mechanism does not affect the initial shot.
Many semi-automatic rifles are very accurate. Accuracy depends on many things, the thickness of the barrel, the type of rifling, the type of ammunition and the skill of the shooter.
Actually for a second shot, a semi-auto rifle is better than a bolt action rifle. To work the bolt, the shooter usually disrupts his position and aim and has to re-acquire the target. With a semi-auto, it is just bang, bang.

GUEST31105 Why not? Enemy snipers could be trained anywhere, by anyone. You cannot assume that since the soldiers are not from a coalition country, that they are worse than the coalition forces. If you assume that then you will be in for a rude awakening when you find a soldier who knows his craft just as well if not better than a coalition soldier.

GUEST22956 Just stumbled in.

I have lots of "power tools" & one of 'em is an off the shelf 26" heavy barrel 700 w/ an H-S Precision stock. It can reach - consistently - out to 1200 yds. The 110 can go to 880. If you're sniping you need the reach not speed, per se. Oh, one last thing: I put a magbox retrofit from Territorial Supplies. It allows me a 10rd mag. - as many of 'em as I want! Lots of firepower w/ just a minimal loss of speed, w/ the accuracy of a bolt.

You take your pick, but for me no contest.

GUEST72196 you are entirely wrong; the m110 does surpass the older m24 by leaps and bounds...much better at long range and accuracy than what you give credit for..obviously, you have NOT done your homework...ranger ron

GUESTOPERATI... Most of you are "bigots for bolt action" for several reasons:
-Ignorance, you failed to study the situation
-Lethargy, no situational awareness not energetic enough to look around in the harsh realm
-inexperience, never fired both weap[ons in combat
-Conservatism is another form of Marxist collectivism, those who abide by establishment rules and conventional thinking.
The use of ponderous bolt action sniper rifles has contributed to the death of numerous US Marine snipers ambushed by Islamic thugs.

GUEST17225 Just to drop my .02

Most times when fast, accurate follow up shots are needed are well within the 880 yard range, the M110 allows for this and I believe it will save many lives directly because of this.

Can't think of a better way of keeping the enemy's head down than having him watch several of his buddies drop dead in quick succession by a sniper they can't see.

Predominantly in Iraq the case of the gunfighters being relatively untrained might have been true, but the Taliban in Afghanistan is a different matter. They've been fighting for years, be it the Russians or now us and have gotten pretty good at it. They know how to aim, set up good ambushes and generally play the guerilla warfare game very well. Fortunately, it seems coalition forces have learned something from Vietnam and are fighting a good fight against them, and systems like this will only help.

For specialist missions when long range, maximum accuracy is required then bolt action rifles will be issued, but for the largest part I think the M110 is the most suitable primary issue rifle for snipers for the current combat situations. I'm glad M21s/Accursed M14s were not just reissued.
