![]() | Associated Press reported that 4143 American soldiers have died in Iraq up to August 16. A considerable number of the deceased solidiers were killed by the rivals’ sudden shots. The new M-110 sniper rifle does not have a high accuracy of shooting. Soldiers preferred the old M-24 sniper rifle. It is hard to believe that the new M-110 sniper rifle can not match the old M-24 sniper rifle.![]() |

![]() | The U.S M-24 sniper rifle is bolt action while the M-110 rifle is semi-automatic. Both are 7.62x51mm NATO caliber. You can tell by their designations that the M-24 is an older design. It is based on a commercial target rifle ( the Remington 700). The newer M-110 is based on the M-16 type action ( actually AR-10) and is very similar in function. The M-110 is made capable of attaching various sights and gizmos like night sights, infrared etc. Target shooters and snipers tend to be very conservative and they probably prefer to keep the old reliable guns and telescopic sights that they trained on years ago. It may take some time before the "new-fangled" M-110 proves itself. The U.S. forces in Irag and Afghanistan have encountered very few actual enemy snipers. The bad guys just point and spray with their AK-47s. Most have not had formal training in accurate shooting. U.S. casualties are primarily from IEDs ( Improvised Explosive Devices) either in car bombs or roadside bombs. Gunshot wounds have traditionally been only responsible for a small percentage of fatalities in combat. U.S. marksmen have been very good at singling out and killing bad guys who take pot shots at coalition troops. |

GUEST81175 ![]() | How can a gas operated semi-automatic rifle be as accurate as a bolt action rifle? |
Jan 20, 2009 19:49 | |
![]() | A gas operated rifle's action does not begin to function until after the bullet has left the muzzle. The puff of gas that operates the action is behind the bullet and only starts unlocking the breech after the bullet is away. This means that the movement of the bolt and mechanism does not affect the initial shot. Many semi-automatic rifles are very accurate. Accuracy depends on many things, the thickness of the barrel, the type of rifling, the type of ammunition and the skill of the shooter. Actually for a second shot, a semi-auto rifle is better than a bolt action rifle. To work the bolt, the shooter usually disrupts his position and aim and has to re-acquire the target. With a semi-auto, it is just bang, bang. |
