| Herein lies the difficulty. With the exception of two Olympics in the past 100+ years, the country with the greatest tally of gold medals also had the greatest total tally of medals. Only in 1896 in Athens did a country finish in second place (total medal count) holding the most golds (USA) and in 1912 in Stockholm, USA again. This is a big reason why we have this petty disagreement now. One fascinating observation, the host countries very often seem to shoot to the top, or near the top of the total medal tally. Apart from the obvious (host country athletes try harder at their Olympics) can anyone post theories as to why this is so? By total medal count: 1896—Athens , winner Greece 1990---Paris, winner France 1904 - St. Louis, winner USA 1908 - London, winner GBR 1912—Stockholm, winner Sweden 1924 – Paris, 2nd place France 1932 – Los Angeles, winner USA 1936 – Berlin, winner Germany 1956 – Melbourne, 3rd Australia 1960 – Rome, 4th Italy 1964 – Tokyo, 4th Japan 1972 – Munich, 3rd Germany 1980 – Moscow, winner USSR 1984 – Los Angles, winner USA 1996 - Atlanta, winner USA 2000 – Sydney, 4th Australia 2008 – Beijing, 2nd China |
