6.8-magnitude earthquake jolts Tibet

According to China Earthquake Networks Center, a strong earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale hit Zhongba county, Shigatse (Xigaze) prefecture in Tibet at 21:22 (Beijing Time) on Monday, August25,2008. No casualties have been reported for the time being.

The epicenter lied at 31degrees north latitude and 83.6 east longitude. The quake was stongly felt in some townships and cracks had appeared in some buildings but there had been no casualties reported said a Zhongba county government official. Gerze and Coqen counties in Ali prefecture also felt the quake. The local government is carrying out disaster relief work.
