| An earthquake measuring 6.1 on the richter scale jolted Southwest China’s Sichuan and Yunnan provinces on Saturday August 30,2008. 32 people have been killed, 27 deaths in Sichuan and the other five in Yunnan, 400 people were injured in the quake, accordint to the Ministry of Civil Affairs. The quake occurred at 4:30 p.m on August 30. The epicenter was at the border of Renhe District in Panzhihua and Huili County in Yi Autonomous Prefecture of Liangshan, Sichuan. Areas affected by the quake include Panzhihua and Huili in Sichuan Province. Yi Autonomous Prefecture of Chuxiong, Bai Autonomous Prefecture of Dali, Lijiang and Zhaotong cities and Kunming,all in Yunnan Province, were also hit by the quake. Chuxiong in Yunnan was the worst hit where the five deaths were recorded, 111,448 homes, 656 school buildings and 213 buildings were destroyed. More than 70,000 people in Panzhihua city were affected by the quake; more than 32,000 people were displaced, according to Panzhihua City Quake Control and Relief Headquarters on Sunday.
