Help! What does "喝西北风" mean?

guest4513 I came across this phrase "喝西北风". What does it mean? Does it literally mean "drink the northwest wind"?

喝西北风 means "live on air', have nothing to eat

you can't explain the phrase word by word, 喝西北风 means "you can't get anything" this phrase is always be used to describe the hard life.
because in the northwest of china,such as the shanxi province,If you are lazy,you don't seed in spring,so you can't get anything in autumn,others will say:"喝西北风" so this phrase is also used to laugh at the man have nothing to eat beacuse of laziness.
