Hi everyone! My friend and I are hoping to travel to China around this time next year and will be visiting Xi'an and Chengdu. I'm having trouble finding information on things to do and places to visit that are slightly off the tourist track. We're, of course, planning to visit the Terracotta Army and Giant Panda Research Centre but would prefer to stay out of cities and large touristy towns. We'll be spending a week in Xi'an and a will then travel to Chengdu for a week as well. I visited Shanghai and Beijing last Summer and enjoyed my time there but felt more comfortable when we travelled outside of the city. I also wondered if any other females have backpacked around China on their own? There will be two of us but we're naturally concerned for our safety? Just wondered if anybody has any advice? Does anybody have any tips on where to stay? We're really looking for youth hostels and cheap guesthouses. Thanks! :-)

Don't miss Hanyangling, Shaanxi Provincial History Museum, Muslim Quarter etc in Xi'an. You also have more than enough time to explore the sights in and around Xi'an quite thoroughly. Try to see the cave dwellings enroute to Yan'an. For Xi'an accommodation, try HQ Hostel and Bell Tower IYH. For Chengdu, try Sim's Guesthouse etc.

Thanks Ellyse, you're the second person to recommend the Bell Tower Guesthouse so I think I'll go with that one. It's pretty central, right?

Well, do consider HQ Hostel as well. It's also very centrally-located.
