![]() | (for more background info on my holiday plans please refer to my thread "Yunnan or Xinjiang") Hi everyone, So after travelling to (most likely) Yunnan with my family at the end of the year/ new year, I'll be travelling with a friend up to Tibet, and most like spending about 10-14 days there. Originally I had wanted to spend maximum time in Tibet, and afterwards catch a train back to Guangzhou and then plane back to Sydney. After all my thinking and (minor) planning, I forgot to factor in Chinese New Year. So it looks like I'll be back in Guangzhou about a week earlier than I anticipated. (This is assuming that my friend will be going back home (Beijing) for Chinese New Year, if not then more travelling time in Tibet or nearby =) ) But assuming I will be back early, I would like to go somewhere nearby. Yangshou was suggested, and my mom suggested Zhangjiajie. So where would be better? And how difficult will it be travelling during Chinese New Year? Or should I not go anywhere and just stay in Guangzhou because travelling during Chinese New Year is too difficult? Thanks everyone, Joanne. |

![]() | Zhangjiajie will be very cold, and most of the hotels/restaurants will be closed over the holiday. I went there 2 years ago during Chinese New Year and was surprised how dead it was (which was great news for me). However, if you were alone, then you really would feel like you have no friends there, as there won't be anyone to talk to. Yangshuo will be much busier, so it all depends what kind of place you are after. Both are beautiful. ZJJ will be more expensive (entrance fees and hotels). If you stay in GZ then unless you have something to do here you will be quite bored. The city is usually quite quiet during the new year. There is the flower festival, and a couple of other places to see, but you could do it all in a couple of days. |

![]() | When I am resident in China I avoid travel in the Chinese New Year period, or just travel locally. If you really want to travel, I would suggest not going at the beginning - the first weekend is chaos. Last year was exceptionally bad at Guangzhou station because of the rail problems from the very bad weather. I wouldn't bother with Yangshuo as I consider it a giant tourist trap. I like Guilin just an hour or two away and as it is a small modern city you will find more to do if the weather is cold, which it is likely to be in the evenings. You can still trip to Yangshuo or other scenic spots in this karst region. |

![]() | Hi, Thanks for your replies. I guess it seems like there's a big chance that I'll be spending Chinese New Year in Guangzhou from the looks of it. Hopefully, if I get the chance I might pop up to Guilin (since its that close) depending on the situation when I get back to Guangzhou. It is because of what happen the the transport system last year that I'm worried about traveling too far from Guangzhou (I don't want to miss my plane home). I've got relatives in Guangzhou, but they might be traveling to Sydney during Chinese New Years and I've got my mom's friends that I can stay with, but I'd rather be out exploring than stuck in Guangzhou for a week. Thanks, Joanne. |
