Murray beat Nadal in the semi-final and will fight Federer in the final. Who do you think will claim the title?

Personally, I hope Federer can defend the title and then he will make another record, winning the US Open title consecutively in 5 years. However, Murray is not so easy to deal with for Federer. In their previous records, Murray and Federer met three times and Federer just won 1 match. It seems that Murray has the advantages. He has made a record too. After beating Nadal, he has become the first British who advanced to the final of the US Open since 1997. Please don't forget that he is the one who defeated Federer, Nadal and Djokovic. Congratulations to Murray!

GUEST8715 Of course Federer. I am expecting that Federer can surpass Sampras. If he can win the US Open title, he will claim his 13th Grand Slam (sounds inauspicious, right?).

GUESTALEX I hope for Federer as it would have been awesome if he beated Sampras record of 14 Grand Slams. Though im afraid Murray will take him. 2-1 to murray in previous matches makes me nervous. Gogo federer! Anyone got a link to live stream from the match? When does it start? im in timezone +1 GMT

Congratulations to Roger Federer on his 13th Grand Slam tournament win!
May it prove to be his 'lucky 13'.

Many fans had given up hope for him, including some even here in this Forum, but I never did.
He was clearly glowing with joy and happiness after his victory today in New York.

It's been a very tough year for Roger for many different reasons, but this win will erase all of the doubts people had about his abilities.

Roger's back!

I've seen a lot of tennis players over the years, but none have had the natural talent, grace, style and charm that this man possesses.

13 is not a good number. Just wish Roger wouldn't end at "13". At least, he should tie Sampras. US Open title is a comfort to Roger. This year, he has tried hard to play but the results are not satisfying. At Australia Open, he stopped at the semi-final. In Roland Garros and Wimbledon, he lost to Nadal, just won the second prize. In New York, he didn't have a chance to fight Nadal. Suppose the final was still between Federer and Nadal, who do you think will win?

Kevin, many people like you make the argument that this year was not a satisfying one for Roger.
While it's true there were many frustrations and heartbreaks for Roger, he still managed to win a Grand Slam tournament and an Olympic Gold medal!

Given the state that tennis is in these days, with new tough competition, you can be assured that Roger is happy with the results so far this year, especially in light of his illness that he as been fighting for most of the year.

I believe Federer would have beaten Nadal in a U.S. Open final this year. The U.S. Open now has the fastest surface of the four grand slams and Nadal was tired from his long year.
If Murray could beat Nadal so easily, Federer would have had a similar result.

And consider this Kevin.

As poorly as Federer has played this past year, how many players can boast they stopped Federer from winning a slam in the past 5 years?

"While it's true there were many frustrations and heartbreaks for Roger, he still managed to win a Grand Slam tournament and an Olympic Gold medal!"

As for winning his Olympic Gold medal, it is funny. His goal is to win the Men's singles but finally he got Men's Doubles. Anyway, wining one Olympic Gold medal is better than none. This reminds me of another question: Once Nadal invited Federer to play doubles but Federer refused. Don't know why he refused. Canadaguy, what do you think of Federer and Nadal if they can form a team to play doubles? Can they play as well as they play singles?

"I believe Federer would have beaten Nadal in a U.S. Open final this year."

Yes, Canadaguy. Although Nadal has improved greatly, he still has a long way to go. His good performance at Wimbledon shows that he can also play well on grass. However, he still needs to make progress on the hard court. This year, he entered the semi-finals of US Open, which is his best record. Hope he can go far next year.

As time goes by, Nadal will become more experienced and mature and Federer, older and older. One day, Nadal will become a great tennis player like Sampras and Federer.

Both players have very heavy playing schedules now. Playing doubles together now is simply out of the question. Federer has other things on his mind right now (like breaking Sampras' record).

Perhaps in a few years, when Federer sets his own new record, and things are calmer for him, he may take up Nadal's offer and play doubles just for fun.

Today, no serious top singles player has time for doubles. Only players who aren't making enough money in singles play doubles these days.

You are much more optimistic about Nadal than I am. I believe he will start to fade as a player in a couple of years. The reason is simple. His style of play is far too demanding on his body.
