According to Olympic Economy Research Association, China has gained about 2 billion US dollars (direct economic profit) from Beijing Olympic Games. The direct economic profit are from four aspects: Beijing Olympics broadcasting rights, Olympic tickets, those sponsors, and mascots and other products related to Beijing Olympics.

What about the post-Olympic benefit? According to Chris Gratton, a professor of Economics of Sports and Recreation, Beijing Olympic Games will bring China 6 billion dollars post-olympic gains. Another Chinese scholar says that Beijing Olympic Games will bring China 71.7 billion dollars from 2003 to 2010. However, it is just estimation. We need time to see if these goals will be fulfilled.

Well, what do you think of Beijing Olympics' economic effects? Can it bring China great profits?

It's a very complex question Yvonne.

First of all, how can one assume that all of the economic growth China has experienced since 2001 can be attributed to the Olympics?

If the growth is not all attributable to the Olympics, then how does one figure out what is and isn't attributable to it?

Next, consider that almost every city that has hosted the Olympics in the past 50 years has been burdened with an Olympic deficit.

How can the public measure quantifiable success if the government isn't completely transparent with its fiscal books?
