Hey guys. I'm new to the forum! My name's TF and I live in Hawaii. I'm about to graduate in December with a degree in accounting. I've already got a job lined up, but I wanted to go off to China (my parent's home country) and teach English/travel/work on my Chinese before I start being bored full-time. I've done some reading and I'm thinking Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Shanghai, Chengdu, Hangzhou. I'm an ethnic Chinese, but I know schools like white faces. I'm not sure if I can do a 1 year contract. I'm looking at more like a 6,7 or 8. I've sent out a bunch of emails to listings on Dave's ESL Cafe to no avail. What do you guys think my chances are of finding a job? Is there a job listing that'll suit me better? Any advice would be greaaatly appreciated.

You should be able to get a job. Yes, there is some prejudice against Asians as a big part of the employment is the marketing angle. If you are not having much success and are keen, I would suggest getting over here, There are many jobs especially this year after the Olympics visa restrictions. Either look or institutions that are employing direct or go for language centres, but for the latter pick the big reputable ones and expect to work longer hours and at weekends. Be prepared to negotiate, they need you! If you want to, private msg me.

I’ve recently met a couple of Chinese Americans. Both Teachers. One of whom runs an English school. I can’t comment of the prejudice angle as this is not my field but there does appear to be a huge demand at the moment for teachers. I also met a couple of European girls the other day who are teaching here. I couldn’t understand a word they said! Dodger.
