Returning to the problem of language, there are 50 recognised minorities in China, most of which have their own dialect or language. When we travelled to Sichuan last year my partner, who is fluent in Mandarin and Cantonese, struggled with the dialects which in Jiu Zhai Gou seemed to be more Tibetan than Chinese. Owing to the migration of workers to the big cities, these dialects spread, and even in her neighbourhood in Guangzhou she hears dialects she cannot easily understand. What chance does a poor laowai have? :o)

Dave,
Finding employment in China is not going to be easy but did you consider placing your photos with a picture agency? You may need to add some more commercially viable examples, say from tourist places like Guilin, or Jui Zha Gou, but they are interesting places to visit anyway, and present some great photo oportunities.

Photo libraries and picture agencies are an option. Sad reality is that most require a minimum amount of photos to start, usually in the region of 200 -1000. They take between 40 and 60% in commision which is a lot even though they do promote worldwide. Images have to be a certain size at 300dpi and to be frank I dont have time to resize the whole of my library.

A friend I know has found a gallery and hotel in Kunming that is thinking of taking my photos, places like that are great for me to promote my work but of course selling is the most important. I am sure with hard work I can make a go of it.

Thanks to everyones suggestions I have now added a mailing list to my site and a much easier option to pay direct through paypal.
Now its up to me to get on and take more interesting images and promote myself more.
I appreciate the advice.

Cant I just take the photos of the country but eat the food?
I do take snaps of everything I eat but they are only snaps, when it comes to eating its time to rest the camera.
