6.6-magnitude earthquake hits area near Lhasa, another 6.8 jolts Xinjiang

A strong earthquake measuring 6.6 Richter scale jolts Damxung County near Lhasa, capital of Southwest China’s Tibet Autonomous Region on Monday, Oct. 6, 2008.

At least nine people were killed in the quake. Previously, it was reported that “at least 30” people was killed. However, the authoritative rescue headquarters said early Tuesday morning that the figure was inaccurate due to unauthoritative sources.

Yangyi Village was the worst-hit site in Gedar Township of Damxung County. At least 147 houses in the Yangyi and neighboring villages were damaged. The round-the-clock relief work was underway. Over 600 soldiers, firefighters, police officers, traffic, medical and geological experts have been deployed to the quake area.

The Qinghai-Tibet Railway and Lhasa were not affected by the earthquake.

Previously, another 6.8-magnitude earthquake jolted Tibet's neighboring region of Xinjiang on Sunday, but no death and injury have yet been reported.

The quake hit a mountainous region about 100 kilometers from the county seat of Wuqia, Kizilsu Kirgiz Autonomous Prefecture. at 23:52(Beijing Time). 196 aftershocks have been observed by Xinjiang earthquake monitoring network.
