![]() | American Airforce has ordered 127 A-10 Thunderbolt II to stop flighting. Cracks are found in the wings of A-10 Thunderbolt II. A-10 was wellknown for its solidity and durability. It is the first U.S Air Force aircraft designed exclusively for close air support.A-10 was first in service in 1975.![]() |

![]() | The youngest A-10 was built 24 years ago. They have been upgraded but they see hard use over Iraq and Afghanistan. There has always been a culture clash between the U.S. Air force and the U.S. Army. The Army wants planes to support troops on the ground while the Air Force ( dominated by former pilots who rose in rank) wants to buy fighters whose job it is to shoot down other planes. It was said that the A-10 was forced on the Air Force and that it did not get the attention it needed until the first Gulf War in 1991. After that A-10s became popular and they were upgraded. But that was years ago. Lately they have been upgraded a few at a time - now many have to be refurbished. |

![]() | It's so ugly that only it's mother (or manufacturer Fairchild Republic) could love it. Guess that is why it was nicknamed the "wart hog" But it's a tough plane just like the B-52 is and was. With it's top speed being subsonic I can see why the USAF pilots would consider this plane about as exciting as kissing your sister. |

![]() | Designed as a ground attack plane and primarily a Tank buster one of the most successful planes the US has ever made. It also has short take off capabilities and can carry a huge payload. As it is designed as a low flying strike aircraft so carries a lot of armored plate, so more like a Tank of the sky than a Ferrari. Dodger. |
