Russia on Tuesday formally returned to China half of an island after 79 years. The Heixiazi(Bolshoi Ussuriysky) Island was seized in 1929 by troops of former Soviet Union in a border skirmish.

The final border-demarcation agreement was signed in July. China and Russia have disputed areas along their 4,300-kilometer border. Russia agreed to concede 174 square kilometers to China. Russia had also conceded Yinlong (Tarabarov) island. Both Heixiazi (Bolshoi Ussuriysky) Island inlong (Tarabarov) island are at the confluence ot the Heilong and the Wusuli(Ussuri) rivers on China’s border with Russia’s far east.

Apparently, the tie between China and Russia will be strengthened after this event. Compared with Russia’s hardline on its western borders with Georgia, its attitude towards China is milder.
