If you meet a thief, what are you going to do? Do you think you will beat him to death?

Five guys beat a thief to death when they caught him stealing a guy's motor bike and the court judged they were guilty. They were all sentenced to 3 to 10 years imprisonment. Before the court made the verdict, these five guys had given 330 thousand yuan to the dead's family. A report said.

When I read this, I was shocked very much. How could they beat him to death? Thief is thief. Most people hate thieves but they shouldn't beat a thief to death?

I think the biggest factor in the decision to jail these guys was that there was 5 of them. Surely, 5 guys can restrain someone long enough for the police to come by and arrest them. And, surely 5 guys can beat up a guy enough, as punishment, and then tell the police that the guy fought back a bit, which explains his cuts and bruises.

GUEST1922 No matter how many guys were there, they shouldn't beat him to death. They just need to transfer him to the police station. That's enough. I understand why they beat him badly. My wallet was stolen by a thief. I thought at that time I would beat that guy badly if I could find him. Unfortunately, I haven't seen him so far.

The thieves are just like the rats on the streets. Everyone wants to beat them when seeing them.

We used to hang thieves. The world would be a better place if we still did. Just think how many bankers and politicians would be swinging from trees with this "economic crisis."

A story from ABC news:

"Less than a week after the federal government had to bail out American International Group Inc., the company sent executives on a $440,000 retreat to a posh California resort, lawmakers investigating the company's meltdown said Tuesday.

The tab included $23,380 worth of spa treatments for AIG employees at the coastal St. Regis resort south of Los Angeles even as the company tapped into an $85 billion loan from the government it needed to stave off bankruptcy."

Griz, that's inhumane but effective. Maybe the AIG executives should be hung because they steal money from the taxpayers and enjoy themselves on a resort.

The Crisis is more than a cycle issue this time. I heard the similar corruption news of top management layer. Unfolding their internal books, their admin. expenses (including sales) eaten up gross margin. Heavy indebtedness can be traced back a couple years ago. High leverage did not bring growth, So there must have been thefts ever since. Those sorts of things are always happening in beaucratic socialist corps which lacks productivity and efficiency.

If a thief uses deadly force or has a weapon it is a different situation than just grabbing a pickpocket. If you use deadly force when the crook has no weapon, you will be in trouble.
In this case, the judge should have let them go and set an example for other would-be thieves. I don't believe the bad guys family deserved any money.

I couldn't put it better than Griz, but if we are speaking specifically about the economic crisis we Americans are facing than we should add predatory mortgage brokers and credit piggybacking scammers.

But if I was faced with a thief, the human in me would give him a good beating before I get the cops involved.

That's what I want to say, Yinduffy. This is what that thief should pay for his behaviour of thefty though the price is too high.

The 5 guys had lost self-control and rational judgement.. They had given compensation (or bribe??) to the deceased's family, that may imply that they regretted with their action? But causing a person to lose his life is murder, no matter who that person is or for whatever reason..

The thief paid a high price for his crime.. A victim of his own action.

Before the court made the verdict, these five guys had given 330 thousand yuan to the dead's family.

The compensation is too much. The court should understand that the tragedy was triggered by the thief. If he didn't try to steal the motor bike, the tragedy wouldn't have happened.
