It depends on different corp cultures. A western professor who works at 14-15 senior level of management (I think VP is at 18 level) used to share his personal experience and stories addressing different corp cultures, which really opened my eyes. Bad culture is poison. Summary is if you don't do the way somebody lets you do, you will be out even if you are a good employee, if you do the way they let you do, you are safe even if you are stupid and lack business ethics.
