There is a popular cultural belief among Chinese people that “we’d rather be poor all the year round than being stingy at a festival”. Chinese people spend a large portion of their savings in a year on important festival. The Spring Festival in China is as important as Christmas in the West. No matter how poor people might be on the normal days, they are generous and even a little extravagant at important festivals: lavish meals and Spring Festival decorations. How about western people deal with important festivals? During the financial turmoil, will you tighten your Christmas budget?

My wife has informed me that our lights will be limited to an indoor decoration in each of our four upstairs widows facing the street. No strung lights or lawn displays. We don't want to spend the money on electric bills. Our interior decorations of a tree with lights and otherwise will remain the same but we have never been big spenders on expensive gifts so we don't have to cut back there. Just some toys for our daughter who has tons of toys already!

Well, I usually tighten my budget without even trying. My lifestyle is the same no matter what holiday it is. And many times I couldn't even put Christmas lights outside because a.) I'm too tired from work and b.) it's too cold outside. Yup, I have lame excuses, so what? :P Besides, I can avoid the hassle of taking them off after Christmas, hehe....

I have a few friends I give gifts on Christmas and their birthdays plus my family so its not so bad. It doesn't take much.
