Why do you call girls "ya tou"?
Nov 24, 2008 02:59
guest8622 I am told that girls are called "ya tou" in the countryside of China. Is this true? Why do you call girls as "ya tou"? There is another phrase “huang mao ya tou". I am curious why you say "huang mao ya tou". As I observe, almost all Chinese girls have black hair. So why do you say "huang mao ya tou"?

GUEST48246 is right. "Huang Mao Ya Tou" is a derogatory word. It implies "young and inexperienced". Another interesting explanation: All babies' hair were yellow when they just came into the world. With their ages growing, their hair turn black. Of course, foreigners are excluded.

"huang mao ya tou"is always a derogatory term in chinese.
But in some casese, it is a term of endearment.
It always can be heard that "She is 'huang mao ya tou', you should take care of her." by a old man/woman.
It means that you should take care of this girl very very carefully and she is very important to this old man/woman.
In north china, "ya tou" always means daughter.
And it is also a term of endearment only can be used by a old man/woman.
