Airport is NE and rather far from downtown Beijing; West train station is on the west side (duh) and around the 3rd ring road.
What time is your flight arriving, and what time is your train leaving?

If you're arriving on an international flight around 1800, I wouldn't dream of catching any train departing from Beijing West train station any earlier than 2100.
I hope you're planning to get your train tickets ahead of time, not on-the-spot.

Any hostel in between is fine I think.

Consider Red lantern and Downtown where you can get a feel of traditional BJ hutong neighborhood. Far east is cheaper and closer to the metro.
