For those who have eaten Lao Po Bing, do you know why it is called "Lao Po Bing"? Here are two legends that I found: No.1 Long long ago, there was a couple who led a poor life but loved each other deeply. For their father was very sick and they didn't have money to bring their father to see the doctor, his wife sold herself to a landlord to earn money for her father-in-law. After losing his wife, the husband didn't give up the hope. He did a lot of experiments and finally made a kind of very delicious cake. Many people ate his cakes but they didn't know what it was called. One day, a guy who bought some cakes from the husband and asked what it was called. The husband thought for a while and said it was called Lao Po Bing. By selling his cake, he saved enough money to obtain his wife' freedom. From then, they started a happy life. Do you know why it was called Lao Po Bing? The husband missed his wife so much so that he called the cake "Lao Po Bing". No.2 A guy from Chaozhou worked in Guangzhou as a pastry chef. Once he went back to see his families with many kinds of delicious Guangzhou refreshments. He thought that his families would like them. But his wife didn't think so. She directly told him that it was not as delicious as Dong Gua Jiao she made. The husband didn't believe what his wife said. So his wife used chopped wax gourd and flour to make some Dong Gua Rong for him. After tasting some, he admitted that it was more delicious than the refreshments he bought back. Before he came back to Guangzhou, he asked his wife to make many Dong Gua Rong so that he could share them with his colleagues. His colleagues also praised that Dong Gua Rong was very delicious. As you see, this special cake (Dong Gua Rong) was made by that pastry chef's wife. So it was called "Chao Zhou Lao Po Bing). Later on, Chao Zhou Lao Po Bing became a very famous cake in Guangzhou.
