In my first thread, I copied a piece of news: a farmer suffered from the serious illness. Without money to have the operation, he comitted robberies two times to send himself into the prison. He heard that the criminal could enjoy free treatment in the prison.

Now, another sad news: a 69 years old farmer tried to rob at Beijing Railway Station with a fruit knife. Surprisingly! He didn't run away after he comitted robbery. Instead, he waited for the police to arrest him. Finally, he was sentenced to two years imprisonment. In the court, he begged the judge to sentence him seriously. Two years is too short for him.

As for the reason of robbing, he said that he just wanted to end his life in the prison. This old man has no son or daughter. So no one can support him. Somebody might say that he is a farmer so that he can raise himself by his field. But he is too old to work in the fields.

I felt very sad after reading this news. In order to survive, the old man has no other choice but comit robbery.

This case has disclosed a serious problem: the government hasn't provided any pension to the old people in the coutry-side. According to the news, about 100 million old people in the rural areas face this huge problem.

It is time for the government to do something to solve this problem. I really hope that there is no more news like these above.

“It is time for the government to do something to solve this problem.”
With respect Leonardo, and perhaps as a guest I speak out of turn but there are many many rich Chinese people with more money than they know what to do with. Just what is the population of the middle classes?
If each one of them donated 10RMB a week into some sort of Farmers trust fund this problem would be fixed over night.
It’s not only very sad but a disgrace that Farmers who spend their lives providing now have to beg for a bowl of rice.
A man like you with a moral conscience to start this off.

Dodger, I am not Leonardo. I am Leopold219.

This is impossible. Those rich guys are very stingy. If you understand why charity activities can't be popular in China, then you will understand it is impossible for those rich guys to donate their money to help the poor.

It’s not only very sad but a disgrace that Farmers who spend their lives providing now have to beg for a bowl of rice.
A man like you with a moral conscience to start this off.

Dodger, my parents are both farmers too. So I know clearly what has happened and will happen to them. Due to the urbanization, more and more farmers have lost their fields. As you see, fields are the most important to the farmers. Without fields, how can they survive? It is true that the government has issued some preferential policies to the farmers. But these policies can't handle all the problems. When they grow old, they just depend on their children.

By the way, I am not a rich guy and I have to support my parents too. To donate 10 RMB per week is no big deal. I have a job though the payment is not high. But I wanna know if my 10 RMB per week can directly go to the poor guys. I would rather give 10 yuan to the poor directly than donate it to the so-called charity organizations. Some charity organizations put people's donation into their own pockets.

Leopold219, my apologies for getting your name wrong.
I was not suggesting that you are one of the rich stingy people but obviously have a conscience otherwise you would not have started this thread in the first place.
These Farmers should not have to rely on charity but neither should we always wait for the government to fix every problem.
Many people on this forum claim that the collective culture is superior to that of the individual. Perhaps they should put their money were their mouth is?
The people of China rose up to help those who had suffered in the recent earthquakes. Most of them needed no prompting from any perceived authority.
Perhaps it’s time to give again

The growing gap between the rich and poor is a disgrace in China..or any other country which allows such a situation....and that includes many western countries.

It is especially sad considering China's recent history and the opportunity it had to show the world that it could create a rich socialist nation. Yes the government has expressed the gap to be a major socio-political issue but what is actually being done to curb the excesses of the arrogant and mostly cultureless 'nouveau riche' and improve the lives of the factory and farm workers? Everyone knows the Labour Law has as much effect as an ice cube in hell. Criticism yes, but I still keep hoping that the rhetoric will be put into practice, or as Karl Marx said, 'Philosophers only interpret the world, the point is to change it'. (ie Stop talking and get on with the job!)

Paul, some of these problems have no practical solution. It is up to kind-hearted people. In the absence of kind-hearted people is great suffering.

It is sad that there are fewer and fewer kind-hearted people now.

Leopold, why dont you give a portion of your money with Dodger and Appault and even include Grizz. There are people whom can share what you have, and then
all if you can rest easy that you are contribruting your share,so none of this happens again in your life time. You can have your names bronzed in the Poor hall of
fame,for giving to the needy.

I have to ask... this man in question, it is 69 old, has no children, no wife, and no family at all, nothing.
My question, what have this man done with his life for almost 70 years... social parasite???
How can people be expecting the government to pay, to provide money and offer the common a home, and a check; government can offer opportunities for a change and infrastructure to drive progress and change, that’s all.
The common must go and make the change happen on a personal level.
China it is only a 30 years young nation, in thirty years of experience, change have touched millions; people by the millions have found a new life and progress in today’s China.
The new Chinese experience has gone well and sound.
Has any other country done better? If the answer is yes, please tell me.
It is easy to just be openly critical of the ones that do something, especially if we do nothing.

Leopold219: It is good that at least you feel sorry for some-one.Its great not to be in the mind of degrading other people as a recreational sport,as most do on this site. Its great to be cynicial, and fortunately, there is every chance to continue such powers of disgrace to you and all. You have no way and it would not matter,if you
did, that life and death matters which all take for granted, will not change until you have been there,at deaths door.Eventually you will also fall by the wayside and may
be at one time be at deaths door. You have not suffered enough,to even have any knowledge of what it is like to have physical and mind lapses due to ill health, and
then to rehabilitate, and once again have a life, after death experiences have been overcome, and a new life experience now exist. You have all not been so blessed
that you are any closer to heaven and God than any other person. What seems like complaining to you, must be because your life experience has not taught you
much about yourself,or others whom share your world with you.
